After 20 years of reliable service, it was time to retire some of the steps of the DWS grate at PGS De Backer Pallets in Poperinge. Our V.Care Vynckeneers stepped in to carry out a well-earned revamp!
This international company, a key player in wooden pallet manufacturing, operates in 12 countries and employs over 1,000 people. 7 large dryers on site handle around 12,000 pallets per day, allowing the factory to ship out roughly 17,000 pallets every day. 2 even larger biomass-powered dryers are scheduled to join the line-up soon, underlining PGS’s commitment to sustainable growth.
In 2003, De Backer Pallets and Peter VYNCKE sat down over a pint and sealed the deal for a VYNCKE boiler at their Poperinge site. This was the beginning of a 2-decade-long friendly collaboration. The 4MW hot water boiler with a DWS grate went into service in 2003 and has been burning pallet waste ever since. After 20 years of reliable service, it was time for a revamp!
The revamping began with the careful removal of worn steps and part of the collector. Our specialists welded in a new collector plate with pre-cut step openings, installed fresh steps, and replaced every airlock and grate plate.
During the pressure test, we inspected every boiler wall, carried out minor repairs, and confirmed that the entire combustion system was once again in peak condition. Routine cleaning and inspections keep the unit running efficiently, and PGS can always rely on VYNCKE’s 24-hour support when needed.
Their advice to keep the performance of your VYNCKE installation as high as possible?
“We’ve experimented with different qualities of wood fuel over the last decades, and found that the lifetime of your boiler depends greatly on the quality of the wood you burn. By using clean A-grade wood, we are able to keep the perfect balance between cost of fuel and maintenance.”

Thanks to these revamps and repairs, we’ve extended the lifetime of this installation by at least another 20 years. With the right care, proactive maintenance and timely upgrades, a Vyncke installation can keep performing well beyond its expected lifespan.
